Lee & Cynthia Wirgau
Maple Grove Gelbvieh started in 1986 when the Wirgau’s purchased 5 half bloods from Thistle Down Farms. Jim Irwin at Lake Audy, MB, whose wife's family were owners of Cadbury Chocolate. Lee, Neal & family loved the Gelbvieh calves and mothers as they adapted to our environment. Since then, they have kept purchasing and raising Gelbvieh. They now have 60 purebred and 140 commercial cows. Maple Grove Gelbvieh have showcased animals at various shows in the US, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta including Ag-Ex and Agribition. They have also exhibited many champions over the years. In the past they consigned to bull test stations winning many bull test station awards. They now consign to the Lundar Bull Sale and sell bulls off the farm. In 2018 they were awarded the 2018 Purebred Breeder of the Year Award. Lee & Cynthia have judged at various 4-H and open shows across Manitoba.
I grew up 5 miles north of Griswold on a mixed farm raising crops and Registered Limousin cattle. I was as a 4-H member from age 9-18, exhibiting steers, heifers and continuation pairs. Along with my brother Kyle I also exhibited cattle at most major shows across Canada in Junior competition. After completing my Junior hockey eligibility I headed to University in Oklahoma where I judged livestock and received my degree in Agricultural Communications from Oklahoma State University. I also had the opportunity to attend many major livestock shows across the United States and evaluate cattle from many operations. Currently we raise commercial cattle, crops and have a gravel and construction business. My wife Kelly is a Registered nurse and my kids Chase and Rose are active 4-H members and hockey players.
